Z06 - The Corvette Built For The Track

Z06 Limited EditionThe special limited edition of the Z06 is characterized by a number of unique 427 styling features, such as the Crystal Red Tint coat metallic paint with ‘stinger style’ graphics, exclusive chromed rims, a leather interior with embroidered 427 logo on the seats and floor mats, ‘Z06’ inscription in the sill strips, and a center armrest with serial number and signature by Corvette factory director Will Cooksey. This special Corvette Z06 is the first signed special edition in Corvette’s 54-year history, and is the first Arctic White Z06 ever offered. Let’s face it, the Corvette Z06 isn’t just sorta kinda impressive if you’d like to actually drive a supercar rather than just read about it; no, the Z06 is completely and utterly amazing. So, the Z06 is genuinely fun to drive, amazingly fast and almost certainly the best Corvette ever.

Relative to its performance rivals, all well over $100,000, the Z06 is a downright bargain at a touch over $70,000. The 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 is a unique car with composite body panels and front fenders of carbon fiber. The Z06 is designed to suit all driving conditions. The curb weight of the Z06 is 3162 pounds with a passenger capacity of two people. The Z06 is provided with a smaller-diameter three-spoke steering wheel that is capable of offering more agility.

With the introduction of the Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06, Corvette is also awakening memories – in an exclusive way. The cars will almost surely be instant collectibles as they commemorate the rich heritage of both the Indy 500 race and the Corvette line. The special edition Z06 model features many personal details chosen by the race driver and designer that will keep his name synonymous with Corvette’s greatest era of racing which has seen it win many special awards, manufacturer’s cups and ALMS GT1 titles. In addition to the larger engine, the Corvette Z06 has a dry sump oiling system, a feature typically found only on race cars and sport bikes.

2008-Z06-blackHowever, some prospective Corvette buyers are surprised to find that the Corvette's manual transmission is fitted with Computer Aided Gear Shifting (CAGS), obligating the driver to shift from 1st directly to 4th when operating at lower RPMs. Equipped with an automatic transmission, the Corvette achieves 18/26 mpg (city/highway), and the manual transmission is slightly better at 18/28. While this boosts the EPA's derived fuel economy, thus allowing the buyer to avoid paying the "gas guzzler" tax, it is an open secret that more than a few sixth-generation Corvette owners with manual transmissions simply have a $20 aftermarket part (CAGS eliminator) fitted to their vehicle to re-enable a normal 1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence at any RPM.

The price of this amazing model is worth every penny to Corvette enthusiasts with the base model going for around $77,500. The wheels are the largest ever placed on a production Corvette, with both front and rear wheels increasing in size and diameter over the Corvette Z06. The exterior of the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 has a wheelbase of 105. With all the power the Corvette has, the brakes will give the car the need stopping power. The 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 has everything you could need or want from a sports car without the high price tag of other sports cars.

Z06 engineThe advanced features not only offer a new look to the Corvette but also contribute significantly to increase the power of this muscular car. Despite a 7-liter engine replacing the 6-liter standard motor, special aluminum chassis parts, and carbon fiber bits here and there, this is a Corvette through and through. The engine is a V8 7 liter 505 bhp @ 6300 rpm. The Corvettes have a good history of a racing car.

The Active Handling stability control system, which allows enthusiastic driving yet can aid safety, is also standard on all Corvettes; the Z06 brings a Competitive Driving Mode. Indeed, the 2008 Corvette can lap a racing circuit nearly as quickly as the previous-generation Z06, a legendary car. The Corvette Z06 accelerates faster, grips better and stops shorter than European sports cars that cost twice as much.

Z06 interioeNevertheless, the Z06 has what it takes to be the ultimate track car, as that's its intended function. Official performance figures indicate that the Z06 can reach 60 mph (97 km/h) in just a little over 3 seconds. Altogether, the Z06 model not only produces more power, it revs faster and higher than any other Chevrolet LS-motor. The advanced features of Z06 sports car include the following: the security system, OnStar, created by GE, to improve the safety values of luxury cars. Chevrolet possesses a few specific features such as the elevated spoilers for its Z06 in order to provide sufficient down force to maintain a balance during the challenging driving situations. The innovative gauge cluster displays the Z06 logo on its tachometer. Not bad, but even so, you have to say that the Z06 ranks as a major step toward affordable supercars.

The Z06 has 40 percent more torque-to-weight than the Ferrari F430, and 30 percent more power-to weight and torque-to-weight than the Porsche 911 Turbo (996). Oh, by the way, if you still aren’t fully convinced, you may want to consider that the Z06 has 50 percent higher torque-to weight than the BMW M5, which is about the same relative difference as the one between the M5 and the Honda Accord Hybrid. Actually, if you have doubts about the Z06, they won’t come from the spec sheet.

Right off the bat, the Z06 revealed a very strong family resemblance to the C6 Coupe. And despite the extra $15,000 or so that you pay, essentially the only apparent design changes are a few small scoops and vents on the exterior, and red stitching and Z06 logos on the interior. One reason is because the horsepower curve on the LS7 engine rises with revs in a way that makes the Z06 feel more like it just wants to run and run. Not only that, but I thought the sound of the Z06 engine and exhaust was more interesting and refined.

Z06 brakesThe Z06 just has phenomenal midrange acceleration, but because the engine is so linear, pulling very strongly from 2000 rpm on up, you can just drink in the thrill ride. The other wonderful element of the Z06 drive train is that it is amazingly easy to drive smoothly.

The Z06 makes the driver look good and feel even better because smoothness happens naturally. The Corvette engineering team obviously stiffened the suspension up a notch, particularly at the rear. Giving the driver a better connection with the road, which the Z06 does, isn’t the same as saying the Z06 has better road holding.

Still, the Z06 has very high limits, it’s just that the somewhat isolated feel of the chassis, combined with similarly isolated steering, can leave you wondering where the limits of the car. Besides getting a firmer suspension and larger wheels, the Z06 Corvette gets a very distinctive brake setup, with red-painted six-piston calipers that actually use six brake pads each; a four-piston setup is used in back.

The Z06 is already the evil twin of the standard LS3 Corvette, but it's not quite the Blue Devil we expect the ZR1 to be. The first signed special edition in Corvette’s fifty-four year history, the limited edition Z06 is also the only Arctic White Z06 ever offered. The displacement for the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 is seven liters, while the bore and stroke is 4. The Corvette Z06 is a true supercar for a price that's merely expensive, as opposed to insanely expensive.
