The LS3 engine is the latest engine and is set to power the Corvette in 2008. Although based on the LS1, it produces an amazing 430 horse power. The LS3 engine is the latest engine. The 2006 model a 6.0L V8 that tops out at 400 horsepower.
Add on the Z06 inspired dual-mode exhaust, and the new engine delivers an even rosier 436 horsepower. Add in cylinder deactivation and you get a very efficient engine. Which is why even though the Vette has 3x the displacement, more than 3x the torque and nearly 2x the HP it gets 2 more highway.
The camshaft timing was revised to optimize performance with the higher-lift intake cam profile. Exhaust-valve lift remains unchanged from the LS2. The camshaft timing was revised to optimize performance with the higher-lift intake cam profile. Exhaust valve diameter has increased to 1.60 inches from 1.55 inches. In order to make room for the rectangle ports and the larger valve sizes, the rocker arms had to be offset 6mm from center on the intake side.
Cylinder heads on the LS3 engine were designed with replicated ports that are identical in every detail, allowing constant cylinder-to-cylinder airflow. The valvetrain was developed on the belief that lighter is more efficient. Cylinders are spaced on 4.84" centers on each bank and the centers of cylinders on the two banks are offset to accommodate the two connecting rods on each crank journal. The big blocks have been produced in 3.935", 4.096", 4.125", 4.250", and 4.440" bores and strokes of 3.47", 3.76", and 4.00". Cylinder bores increased from 3.90 inches to 4.00 inches (LS2 applications). Similar to the LS6 block, the PCV valve was moved from the rocker covers to inside the valley.
Cars in general cost more in Australian than in America. That said its still a whole load cheaper than any of the foreign competition. Cars with manual transmissions use GM's LS3 engine expected to produce 422 horsepower and 408 pound-feet of torque. The LS3 engine debuted on the 2008 Corvette and uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06's LS7 engine for strong low-end torque and high-rpm power.
Exhaust-valve lift remains unchanged from the LS2 though the camshaft timing was revised to optimize performance with the higher-lift intake cam profile. Exhaust system – Optional on ’08 Coupe and Convertible models is a new, two-mode performance exhaust system. Similar in design and function to the system used on the Z06, the dual-mode exhaust uses vacuum-actuated outlet valves, which control engine noise during low-load operation, but open for maximum performance during high-load operation.
Bore diameter has increased from 4.00 inches to 4.06 inches, resulting in a displacement gain from 6.0 Liter to 6.2 Liter. This block is also used for the L92 truck engines. Bored out to 6.2 liters (from last year's 6.0), the new-generation Corvette engine pumps out a rousing 430 hp at 5,900 rpm. That's 30 hp more than last year.
